Help the Garden Club Grow

My students need a green house to start our spring garden vegetables and flowers. Last year, we lost our sprouting vegetables twice because of late cold snaps.

My Students

Ever plant a garden to only have a late winter frost kill all of your hard work? Ever have a student in eighth grade tell you she wants to learn to grow vegetables because she is worried about being able to provide healthy food for her family? Ever try to engage students into a lost American hobby?

My students are boys and girls that are in grades 6-8.

They joined the garden club at school to learn the appreciation of putting food on the table. They joined this club over 31 other club choices. All expressed they would like to learn something new and to be able to grow vegetables at their home. This greenhouse will allow them to learn how to construct it and start seeds in a warm environment for spring planting.

My Project

The first thing I will do if we receive this greenhouse is to construct it. What better way to incorporate this into a club activity. This will show children that to start a garden, you must have a nurturing environment to start your seeds. This will change student lives for the better by showing them that growing vegetables has gratification that is not instant, but it does happen with hard work and dedication to your garden. My students will learn to assemble the greenhouse, by establishing a level foundation, using measurements and then final assembly of the structure. After the construction phase, we will plant seeds for a plant sale and for our vegetable garden here at school. Upon harvest, we will donate the produce to a local charity.

By receiving a donation of this magnitude, my club members will see that there is hope from generous sources.

Children get wrapped up in the negatives that make headlines that they often forget there is good in our world. By receiving this greenhouse, we can shine light on on a child's dim world. We can also show them that a garden can help them have an "out" different from any other extra-curricular activity.
