My Students
We are a Chicago-based charter school, serving four hundred eighty Pre-K through 8th grade students. Many are from refugee families, many are from low income families. At a young age, they already have stories from their lives that would seem unbelievable to most of us. The art room is a safe place for these children to tell their stories. They learn to express themselves and to think creatively in a classroom where many of the lessons have a theme of tolerance, peace, and embracing diversity.
My Project
I have several students this year who have trouble regulating emotions. A classroom fish will give them an opportunity to get out of their own head.
Caring for a classroom pet will help motivate some of my most challenging students, and will create a positive addition to our classroom environment and culture.
I have a group of students who are in my room after school for two hours every day and a classroom pet will make our room feel more like home.
I'm requesting an aquarium, pebbles, plants, betta balls, water conditioner, floating mini pellets, and a betta hammock.
In addition to purchasing a fish, we have a donation of snails that can coexist with a beta fish. All we need is the basics for our aqua pet's to call home!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
