My Students

"The proper use of science is not to conquer nature but to live in it." I want to teach students to respect the environment and live sustainably. My classroom is colorful and creative. I use hand-on labs, science songs, and video clips to help all styles of learners and keep students engaged.

I am lucky to teach around 100 high school students in grades 10-12.

We are a rural, low-income school district surrounded by farmland, which many students live and work on. Many of my students are tactile or kinesthetic learners. After our district downsized and cut our industrial arts and family consumer science programs and half of our music, agriculture, and art programs, I realized there were not many hands-on opportunities left for students. Now that they are without many of their interactive elective courses, I can tell my students miss being able to get out of their desks, work with their hands, and create things. I feel more responsibility than ever to provide hands-on opportunities for students. I strive to provide as many inquiry lab experiences as possible throughout all of my science courses despite the district's financial struggles.

My Project

Students will use the Invasive Species EcoKit and stopwatches to examine the effect of introduced species on native species and how they can affect an ecosystem. We will expand on this lab by talking about invasive species in our own area and what we can do to help control them. In the second lab, students will explore sustainable resource use practices. They will design and create their own ecosystem and simulate the harvesting of natural resources. Students will need to problem solve to overcome the challenges involved with obtaining resources while simultaneously attempting to protect and conserve the environment. I hope that the information students learn and experience with these labs will allow them to understand the importance to sustainability and leave them with a desire to incorporate more green actions into their daily life.

Donations will greatly improve our school by giving students an opportunity to do hands-on, engaging lab activities.

It will allow students to visual our class content and gain a deeper level or understanding for life and environmental sciences. I also hope that it will open their eyes to environmental issues in their own backyard as well as globally, and lead them to become eco-citizens.
