Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I certainly do care about measuring educational results. But what is an 'educational result?' The twinkling eyes of my students, together with their heartfelt and beautifully expressed mathematical arguments are all the results I need," Keith Devlin.
My classroom is located in the state of Washington at a Title I school.
Our school is Dual Language English and Spanish. Students at my school are hardworking, kind, eager individuals. Many students are first- and second-generation citizens from Africa, South America, and Asia. Our differing cultures, backgrounds, economic statuses, and languages provide richness in the classroom. However, we still face challenges. One challenge is that we are incredibly underfunded. There are so many learning experiences that I wish we could have with our students if we only had the means.
My Project
We are a new Dual Language school and need texts to help us become better at teaching in this setting.
Individuals who are bilingual and biliterate switch between two different language systems.
Their brains are very active and flexible. Research also shows that, compared to their non-bilingual peers, bilingual people have an easier time:
• understanding math concepts and solving word problems
• developing strong thinking skills
• using logic
• focusing, remembering, and making decisions
• thinking about language
• learning other languages
Who wouldn't want that for their child as well as all children everywhere? Help us deliver an education that children deserve. These books will help us, the educators, run our system more smoothly and provide better instruction. The books I'm asking for are 45 Strategies That Support Young Dual Language Learners, An Educator's Guide to Dual Language Instruction, Toma la palabra!, Struggling Learners and Language Immersion Education: Research-Based, Practitioner-Informed Responses to Educators’ Top Questions, and other great titles. Thank you for supporting us and therefore our students! We all appreciate it.
