Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach at a continuation high school in downtown LA, where green spaces are uncommon. I want to turn my classroom into a calm, nature-focused space where my students can feel more at peace and connected to the environment around them. My students are inquisitive and seek to bring positive change. As the advisor for our school’s gardening club—the only club we have—I’ve seen how working with plants can really benefit our students. They take ownership of the school space, befriend one another, and use the time to connect with nature and de-stress. My plan is to bring that same energy into the classroom. My homeroom students will take care of plants using the Aerogarden hydroponic system, LED Grow Light, and a Marineland 5 gallon aquarium, growing flowers from Aerogarden meadows seeds and feeding shrimp. This hands-on experience will help them develop a sense of responsibility and, hopefully, spark a love for nature.
The flowers they grow can be used in school art projects, made into bouquets, or even given as gifts to members of our community.
Plus, I’m also planning to incorporate tools like tangle therapy toys and calm strips to help students relax and stay focused.
