This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Boston Collaborative High School (BCHS) is an alternative high school within Boston Public Schools that serves opportunity youth. Our School is unique in that it is a collaborative effort between BPS and Boston's community-based organizations serving students who have specific challenges requiring non-traditional approaches to learning.

Students are provided a personalized learning experience.

Through the use of project-based and blended-learning experiences. The curriculum and instruction is aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Standards and Boston Public Schools curriculum map. We utilize tailored-differentiated instructions to guide our students toward successfully achieving their academic goals.

An essential component of Boston Collaborative is our St. Mary’s program. This program provides wrap-around services in the form of social workers who oversee all aspects of the student’s educational and emotional development. St. Mary's strives to empower our expectant and parenting students to achieve academic success which prepares them to excel in college, career, and life. Each student has a specially developed and facilitated care plan, which includes pre-placement, postpartum support and reengagement into school after delivery.

Despite the support we provide our parenting students, many continue to experience social isolation and stigmatization that comes from being teen parents. To further support our students, we have partnered with First Teacher; a valuable organization that was created to increase our students’ confidence and capacity in a safe, nurturing, judgment free community. Through your donations we will be able to create a classroom that enhances these support and educationally based workshops.

As a result, our parenting students feel connected with others who understand the challenges of being parenting students. In doing so, their feelings of isolation and stigmatization is lessened. Through your donations we will be able to create a classroom that enhances interactive relationships with peers and fosters a teaching and learning atmosphere for them and their babies.
