My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I try to keep things simple, creative, and meaningful for their learning experiences.
My students are hard-working, creative, and clever.
Their love for reading at this age is essential for me to create as a teacher. From the minute they walk into my classroom I focus on their potential to grow as a reader while they are with me. Many of my students receive free or reduced lunch and are raised in a poverty area. I may not be in control of their home lives; however, I can certainly teach them how to love school and reading through their experience in my classroom.
My Project
My students need materials to take home to enrich their learning at school. Education can be challenging for those students that do not have the materials needed to enhance their learning at home. Many of my students need learning games, take home phonics books, and spelling activities to help practice skills taught in the classroom in a fun way. With these materials I would be able to make games for phonics, spelling, and grammar. These games would be printed and laminated and sent home in bags for students to practice learning and engage in family time. I would also use these materials to print and make small readers for students to take home. These readers will help students become stronger readers and have books to take home that are on their level. With the materials requested, I would be able to use the ink, paper, and laminating pouches to create many family involvement activities for parents to help their children at home.
Struggling students often need that extra reinforcement activity at home to help them build upon their success in the classroom.
It allows for the parents to become involved in their child's education other than the normal paper/pencil activities. Students who read these take home materials find learning to be fun and begin to interact with learning at home in a positive way! Helping students understand that homework can be fun will help their self confidence while in the school setting. Take home games, art projects, phonics games, and spelling games will help students continue their love for learning at home and provide parents with ways to interact with their child. My students will love getting take home supplies to enrich their learning at home.
