I am an Itinerant Hearing Education Service provider for students K-12th grade. I work one on one with hearing impaired students. This is only my third year teaching with this population and already I have the privilege of watching the students i had three years ago develop into bright young adults.
The students I work with have hearing impairments ranging from unilateral losses to bilateral cochlear implants.
Some of them are from low income families and do not have access to computers or tablets on a daily bases either at home or at school. They are continuously asking to use technology that is just not available to them and therefore are missing out on the amazing educational opportunities the apple apps offer.
My Project
Having the access to an iPad will increase the frequency of their exposure to digital technology, especially through our one on one sessions. After reading the reviews of many of the apps that I have incorporated into my iPad curriculum, I am very confident my students will be actively engaged with the apps and will improve their auditory comprehension/memory and auditory processing skills significantly.
Throughout these past few years of teaching students with hearing loss I have compiled a list of educationally beneficial apps. These apps include Starkey Hearing Technology's 'Hear Coach',Virtual Speech Center's 'Auditory Workout, and Alligator Apps' 'ABC Genius,' just to name a few. These apps, plus many more that are in my curriculum target hearing impairment issues with techniques such as auditory comprehension, lip reading, and auditory processing. My students will be engaged in user friendly activities that capture their full attention with a listen and respond approach
The apps I plan on using with my students will improve and develop my students' auditory processing and speech reading skills.
My students who come from low income families will get the exposure they need to technology. They will receive the necessary improvements to their education and become familiar with the ever growing technological world we live in today.
