Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our magnet school has not reaped the benefits of extensive north Brooklyn gentrification and development. Our school primarily serves the children of local city housing projects; disenfranchised youth who face incredible odds. Despite our lack of resources and a "high risk" population (near 30% of our students are considered disabled), our staff rises, grinds and *shines* every day. Students are greeted with a smile, a handshake, and music in the morning. Teachers and service providers volunteer their free time to do hall monitoring, check-in with children who need extra support and work intensively with groups. The staff stays late every day to plan and process for those in the most need.
Our students seek structure and guidance every day, but like many public schools, our classrooms lack some key resources to service them.
G. needs interventions with his executive functioning delays. E. needs behavioral support and consistent checking in. T.'s dyslexia is contributing to his acting up in class.
Despite their personal situations, our students come to school each day wanting to learn.
My Project
Our students need access to educational evaluations that will allow us to update their Individualized Education Programs. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children is an intelligence test that measures a child’s intellectual ability and 5 cognitive domains that impact performance. Evaluations software, such as the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (Spanish), require a windows operating system. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has shut down our access to school computers. Without a windows computer, we would be unable to grade these evaluations. Please help us give our children access to these assessments by way of their grading software!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
