Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Einstein once said, "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." Many SWD have been told they're "stupid" because they learn differently. Help them find their math genius with the aid of technology!

My students are from New York City; the majority living in government housing or living with government aid.

Sadly, most do not have role models at home to teach them the basics of every day life as it relates to finance. They rely on the school "Business Math and Financial Literacy Elective" to teach them a variety of financial literacy topics. Some of the topics this class addresses are: How to balance a check book, how to open a checking or saving account, how to equate APR on credit cards and loans, understanding the differences between a credit card and debit card, along with a variety of other financial topics that are essential to every day life.

My Project

I envision the four Chromebooks requested being used by students to conduct research about various financial topics and to participate in a Virtual Simulation of the NY Stock Exchange. The Chromebooks will allow students to research various topics, for example, APR rates, how APR correlates to various financial transactions, bank choices, the Stock Market, and tracking stock trends. The Chromebooks will also be used to teach basic financial literacy such as balancing a virtual checkbook, renting an apartment with an estimated income and balancing the costs of every day living. With the aid of technology students will learn, what everyday life in the real world is like and what they are expected to financially understand in order to be contributing members of society.

Students with disabilities generally get the short end of the stick; kicked out of the computer lab for bigger classes or having the smallest classroom with the fewest resources hidden away somewhere.

It also means my student have minimal access to technology (truth is all tech we have is from donors like you!) In this age all students have to be able to use technology for everyday life, so having Chromebooks will help ensure my students are current with the skills needed in the 21st century.
