Our class loves learning about the world around us. My 4th and 5th grade students with autism enjoy science--many tell me it is their favorite subject in school--but don't spend much time outside, which makes learning about the environment difficult.
I would love to extend our spring science unit on animals, plants, and people in the environment by taking a guided field trip to Prospect Park. We have been spending a lot of time growing plants on our windowsill and discussing animal adaptations, but there is nothing like observing plants and animals in a natural environment to learn more about them. I also want my students to be able to see just how their actions can impact their environment. As Brooklynites, Prospect Park is essentially their backyard and I hope that exploring it will help influence them to be more environmentally responsible.
The Audubon Center in Prospect Park offers student workshops that utilize the natural beauty of the park around it. We would like to participate in a workshop titled "Humans and Habitats", during which students will cultivate an understanding of some of the features of their local urban environment and some of the positive and destructive ways that students alter their environment.
Please consider donating in order to help my class understand and appreciate their local environment, the animals and plants within it, and the impact they have upon it. Thank you!
