Help Students Make a Positive Impact on Our School Community
Help me give my students the opportunity to do community service activities on campus to help complete volunteer hours with safety vests, trash bags, safety cones, gloves, and other necessities.
Year after year, we see middle and high schoolers come to our school asking us to assist them in getting their mandated volunteer service hours completed as part of their graduation requirement. This has motivated our school to set something in place for out 5th graders to be able to do the same as part of a voluntary community service project. We want to reward those who complete 10 or more hours in the school year with a special recognition at the end of the year. After we kick off this community service initiative to the 5th graders, our goal is to extend this incentive to our 4th graders to allow them to join as well.
We will have three ways the children can help; they can help the younger children during recess/lunch, be part of the recycling/trash pick up crew, or take part in the lost and found crew.
We envision that each group will have their own colored vest to wear to distinguish the duties. Each crew will have a bag with all their supplies in it along with a sign-in and sign-out sheet near the office. This will allow it to be accessible by all.
Community service is one of the best ways to teach your child the value of empathy. Not only does volunteering show kids kindness, compassion and selflessness, but it can also teach a variety of life skills as well. Volunteering helps kids build skills and confidence. Kids learn to show up on time and be a member of a team. They might even take on a leadership role as well.
