Help Students Learn About Their Anatomy With A Dissection!
My students need 5 preserved fetal pigs, 3 dissection pans with covers, and 5 boxes of gloves for hands on observations to complete our unit of study on body systems.

My Students
The first questions my new students ask on the first day of school is "Will we get to dissect anything this year?" Every year students look forward to this "rite of passage" in science class, I would like to make this year extra special with upgrading from our standard frogs to exciting pigs!
This year I have the pleasure of having 159 wonderful young 7th grade scientists.
They love to get their hands messy in science experiments. With every unit of study, their understanding of the world around them sparks engaging discussions and debates of science. Unfortunately budgets are tight and lab activities and experiments that require ordered materials each year rarely get funded.
My Project
Every year I am surprised by how unaware students can be about their own body. Learning the human body units are always a highlight of the year for students, they love to delve deeper into the inner workings of their bodies. Ending with a fetal pig dissection is fantastic because it brings all the pictures and video clips into real perspective. We also go into discussion on the ethics of dissections and proper respect and handling of the specimen that we are fortunate enough to be able to study.
*Carolina's preserved pigs were not raised for the purpose of dissection; they are a byproduct of the pork industry. Most of the pigs were stillborn and would be discarded were they not re-utilized for educational purposes.
This sometimes highly controversial activity is my favorite activity of the year.
I love the passion it brings out in those that choose to do an alternative assignment in which they participate through an interactive site, and I love the pure excitement the rest of the students get from being able to see just how similar we are to other animals we share this planet with.
