This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I believe children are the future. Teach them well and let them lead the way." These are not only words from a popular song but a strong belief that I hold as a teacher.

Equity for all!

My students are full of potential. They are bright shining beacons of light. I am asking for assistance so that they can glow like the stars that they are.

Fortunately, for the students in my class, envisioning the future is something we think of and talk about often. Because their daily existence is so challenging, I have them focus on their bright and delightful futures!

I teach in a low socio-economic area at a Title I school where 99% of the population receives free breakfast and lunch at school. On most days the heartiest and healthiest meals that the students receive are what they eat at school. It isn't unusual for the students in my class to stockpile food in their book bags to take home in order to have something to eat later that day.

Despite the harsh circumstances and backdrops of their lives, the students come to school daily with smiles on their faces.

My Project

My students deserve a chance at success. The families in our learning community of the Bronx, NY have been heavily hit by COVID-19 and unemployment rates. These parents dream of a better future for their children. In my Title 1 school, parents struggle to provide even the most basic school supplies for their son or daughter. Something as meaningful as a book purchase, is put off, in lieu of food and paying the rent.

Please help my students get books that are just right for them.

With these leveled books, they can read to succeed. When we consistently place readers in texts that are too hard (or even too easy) for them, we have a problem. New learning does not thrive in these zones. Rather, learning happens in the Zone of Proximal Development, or the child’s “just right” level, as first introduced by Vygotsky.

“When students are instructed within their own zone of proximal development—at their own level—they are able to build on what they already know, to learn what they need to know next, to move forward” (Bear, et al. 2004).
