My Students
Everyday when I get to school, I have a group of students waiting for me at the band room door, and at the end of everyday, I have to shove them out the door to go home. My students absolutely love music and are committed to being in the music program.
My band members are hard working, young adults.
Many of them take advanced courses and participate in sports or other clubs in addition to the music program. The majority of students in my school lack school spirit, but my students more than make up for it. They are proud of everything they do and are determined to make a difference.
Their excitement for the upcoming school year and marching band season is infectious! They are full of ideas of how to make our band even better, and I want to do everything I can to make those ideas happen. Unfortunately, my program does not receive much funding, so it is often difficult to purchase the materials they need to help make these improvements.
Our drumline is most in need of help. The sticks my students are currently using are very old, and my members can't always afford to buy new ones. Replacing and providing these items would be a nice surprise for them!
My Project
In addition to class time, my marching band rehearses 2-3 times a week after school and performs at home football games. The drumline rehearses more often than that, usually adding an extra day of rehearsal after school. These sticks will be used almost everyday in the fall. Through receiving new equipment, my students will be more motivated to practice, and it will help them learn responsibility and proper instrument care.
My students already have plenty to worry about between academics and extracurriculars.
Having good equipment for band should not be on that list. By having a full set of new sticks, my drumline and I would not have to worry everyday about whether or not we have enough basic material to rehearse properly.
