Help Student's Focus Better and Improve Their Sleep With Lighting.
Help me give my students a different experience. One that won't effect their circadium rhythms and sleep patterns and one that will help them with their productivity.
We are surrounded everyday with artificial light. Fluorescent lightbulbs and LED lightbulbs that are in classrooms are effecting student's productivity and circadium rhythms.
“Light is the most important environmental input, after food and water, in controlling bodily functions.” This quote by Dr. Richard Wurtman, a neuroscientist and physician who spent about six decades splitting his time between Harvard and MIT, pretty much sums up the importance of why schools should pay close attention to lighting in academic environments.
Fluorescent lighting can have negative effects on children, potentially causing eye strain, headaches, difficulty concentrating, and increased hyperactivity due to its flickering nature.
Research at Ball State who conducted studies in classrooms supports that lighting systems can have non-visual effects on humans such as psychological stability many studies have found that normally functioning fluorescents can be a source of flicker and have biological effects such as a general feeling of discomfort, illness, headaches, eye strain [18] and reduced speed of visual search and performance .
Yes, blue light can disrupt circadian rhythms, making it harder to fall and stay asleep. This is because blue light activates photoreceptors in the retina, which signal the brain to suppress melatonin. Melatonin is the hormone that helps regulate sleep.
My goal is to control the lighting experience in a positive way. After 25 years in a fluorescent lit classroom, I would like to make a change and have a positive impact on the moods, attitudes, and alertness of students. I would like to impact on student engagement and on task/off-task behaviors, and help overall student well-being. Together we can revolutionize the modern day classroom.
