My Students
Our school serves students from transitional kindergarten through 5th grade. The student body includes about 450 students altogether. The student body is widely diverse, and 55% of the students come from low-income families. Our school is a Title l school.
My fifth grade class includes 35 fabulous learners.
Our classroom setting includes students with different interests, experiences, learning styles and needs.
We strive to create a comfortable school environment in which students look forward to coming each day to develop their academic and social skills.
My Project
This year we are exploring flexible seating options within our fifth grade classroom. New additions to our classroom include lap desks and a coffee table. A small area rug underneath our coffee table will add color and comfort for students who choose to sit there. Standing desk options will help students who are more active and prefer to move around while working independently. Choices will foster inclusion for all learners.
Children are working hard in fifth grade to learn about themselves and how they do their best work, flexible seating empowers them to make choices that work for them!
As a teacher I am branching out from assigned seating and trusting that these 9-11 year old students will learn how to effectively navigate independent and small group work in a more flexible, accessible classroom environment.
Students will have opportunities to sit in seats of their choosing throughout the day. This will prove to be particularly important during math workshop while students engage in hands-on investigations in partnerships and small groups.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
