Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We are requesting a power bank and an accompanying solar panel to reintegrate hot, cooked foods in our outdoor garden classroom. Though there is no outlet or other form of electricity for us to use in the garden, we can harness the power of the sun to assist us in my students' cooking classes! With a solar charged power bank for our induction stove, we can fully incorporate fun recipes like Wonderful Wonton Soup, Rainbow Carrot Tacos with freshly warmed tortillas, Maize Porridge, Zucchinicini, and so many more vegetable-forward dishes.
Our Seed to Table program introduces gardening and cooking concepts to our elementary students with the idea that we can grow and nourish both people and plants using the power of the sun!
Hot foods can elevate the experience of a cooking class from a simple raw salad type dish to warming, comforting foods. Our program 1) incorporates more relevant comforting foods such as recipes coming from the students' various cultural heritages (Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, Indigenous Peoples Month) or 2) introduces perhaps new seasonal school-grown vegetables to our students.
Our students are avid learners who are eager to practice different cooking techniques, and it would be integral to their learning to experience the myriad ways that a chef would cook foods, like sautéing, boiling, and blanching! Preparing the vegetables in a different or novel way than what they are already familiar with may also change their opinion on the flavor, encouraging them to eat more of the rainbow of fruits and vegetables! Your support towards a battery and solar panel would help 500 students cook, learn, and grow with the sun!
