Help Students Connect Immigrants From the Past to the Present
Help me give my students a classroom set of this novel so they can learn about immigration in the time of the Nazis. It is important for them to make connections from the past to the present.

My Students
My students are native speakers of Spanish. Some are born here as first generation students and others come from around the world. I have had students from Venezuela, Colombia, Spain, Ecuador, Peru, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Cuba, Nicaragua, Mexico - almost every Spanish speaking country. Some students also come from dual language classes and Spanish is not their first language and their parents do not speak Spanish.
They are rich in culture and experiences.
They are willing to share and help one another be successful in this country.
My Project
My students are all immigrants or their parents are immigrants. I want to make the connection for them that immigration is not just a current problem. It is a problem that has been going on for many generations. We would like to compare and contrast immigration practices from the past to the immigration practices today. Bringing history into the Spanish classroom is interdisciplinary and makes the class more interesting. They are able to see that they or their parents are not the only immigrants in history. Immigrants are not just Hispanic. Immigrants are not just from Hispanic countries. I want to remind them and talk to them about the American dream and how many people in the world still believe in the American dream. I want them to take advantage of their great opportunities here in the USA. I also want to remind them that letter writing/the format of this book is not a lost art. Many people still love to write letters and it is a beautiful way to communicate to others and also at the same time document history in the world and in your life.
