This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My high-need students need books! Many of my sixth grade students struggle to read and understand texts, and it is important that they begin to enjoy reading now, in their first year of middle school.
I teach in a tough neighborhood in New York, and many of my students lack attention and guidance from home.
Some of these students read on a third or fourth grade level, and they are starting to give up on their own education because they don’t want their classmates to know their difficulties. I want this to be the year things start to turn around for them, to set them on the right path from middle school into college.
My Project
I want my students to have more attractive book options. By providing cool new books and graphic novels that they love to read, they will get excited about reading time. Also, graphic novels can be a great steppingstone for struggling readers. The pictures can help them access texts that would otherwise be too hard. They will love fun, easy books like “Dork Diaries” and more advanced graphic novels like “Bone” and “Artemis Fowl.” They will also be able to read graphic novel versions of regular books, like “The Lightning Thief.”
Reading fun new books and graphic novels can change reluctant students’ attitudes about reading, and prepare them for more difficult books in the future.
My students are capable of great progress, and investing in books they love will show them that. They have untapped enthusiasm and ability in reading, and your support will bring that into my English classroom.
