My students need headphones and read-alongs for the opportunity to listen to books that are appropriate for their age level.

My Students
My students have not all had opportunities for "lap time" readings throughout their childhood. A listening center would allow my struggling readers to listen to books appropriate for their age level and build on that lap time they may have missed.
I have students who are two to three years below grade level in reading.
Some students have been identified for special education, other students are English language learners, while others are just "catching up". They work very hard and do their best every day, however, they struggle to work independently. Their limited reading skills don't allow them to enjoy stories most students their age may begin to read.
My Project
A listening center will help engage students and provide them with learning opportunities similar to those of their same-aged peers. They would be able to choose books they are interested in - not just those books they find at their reading level. Practicing and following along with audiobooks has also been researched as a highly effective way to improve student reading fluency. New demands in our curriculum also require students sharpen their listening skills, which would be an added benefit of the equipment.
This equipment may help them acquire independent learning skills and provide them with the choices they need to make their learning experience meaningful.
Exposing students to rich and colorful literature will inspire them to become avid readers!
