My Students
Third grade is a critical year in a child's education. In addition to tackling a rigorous curriculum, students are expected to become more independent learners and thinkers. For students with a weak math foundation, the demands of the third grade curriculum can be overwhelming.
I work as a 3rd grade CTT teacher at an all-girls' charter school in the South Bronx.
My classroom of 25 enthusiastic learners includes students whose academic skills are years above grade level as well as students with learning disabilities and several who are just learning to read and write in English.
Our math curriculum emphasizes the development of a deep understanding of math concepts. Students are encouraged not just to memorize the calculations necessary to solve math problems, but to understand the reasons why these calculations work. However, some of our students have not yet solidified their understanding of basic math concepts, such as place value. When students have trouble adding single-digit numbers and regrouping, it is incredibly difficult to move on to more complicated skills such as multiplication and division - both part of the third-grade curriculum. Our students need practice with the skills that they are missing so that they can continue to grow as mathematicians.
My Project
I have selected a variety of math materials that will enable struggling students to strengthen their foundational skills. These activities and games can be completed in small groups, partnerships, or independently when students are not working with a teacher. With the solve and check math sliders and the problem-solving card bank, students will be able to solve problems and check them without relying on a teacher for help. The addition, subtraction, and multiplication practice centers provide a variety of activities that will help my students strengthen their ability to use these operations. Time bingo and the two-way teaching clock will help solidify students' ability to tell time. Students who are typically less than enthusiastic about math will be excited to play the money, greater than/less than and fact family games.
By providing my students with the tools they need to work on their own, you will not only help them improve their math skills, but also increase their self-esteem while lessening their dependence on teacher support.
Please consider helping my students acquire the tools they need to succeed in third grade, and in the future.
