My students need a library of story books in the music room to inspire our music making and developing literacy!
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Larsson's classroom raised $286
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students will enter my classroom with their own unique stories, gifts, talents, struggles, and challenges. The average class size averages 20 students, with about 30% of the student population belonging to minority groups. My students in Kindergarten, First, and Second grades visit the music room twice a week for 40 minutes; one Pre-Kindergarten class and Self Contained Class (Special Education) will visit the music room once a week for 30 minutes.
PE serves just under 280 students, with more than half the students receiving either free or reduced lunch.
Situated in a rural county placed halfway between Rochester and Syracuse, the small city hosts a population of just under 9,000 that has been declining steadily since the 1970's. Annual median household income is currently $35,490, which is 40% less than the national average with the largest share of households in Newark making less than $10,000 a year.
My Project
My project is to create a music specific library that will contain books read during lessons as well as other books that tell stories about music making or inspire music making. These books will feature characters of all races and genders, and will encourage music making through composition, singing, dancing, and play instruments.
Music is a fantastic tool to facilitate improvement in literacy for struggling readers by activating key parts of the brain that build stamina for young eyes to move left to right, recognize phonemes, and comprehend syntax and structure.
Music instruction and music play has been linked to improved reading readiness for young preschoolers in a study done by the University of Buffalo.
These books will enhance the print-rich musical classroom that I dream of creating for my students. My classroom library will provide ample opportunities to introduce musical concepts while captivating the students -books that I read on the carpet to them, then they can complete work there, and then we get up and move to music that connects to the book we just read! Every student book that is placed in my library will be treated with love and care, and will continue to inspire students year after year as they enter and leave the music classroom.
