Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are future leaders who show our school values of love, courage, curiosity, justice, and growth every day. They demonstrate a true love of learning and are proud to share how they "grow their brains" at school. Our scholars persevere through many challenges and are determined to never give up. They are primarily emerging bilinguals who are working on improving their communication skills in reading, writing, and speaking. Our resilient and vibrant community is a special place, and I feel lucky to be at a school that prioritizes student belonging, social justice, and equity. Getting to watch my students grow as readers, writers, thinkers, and problem-solvers truly emphasizes their potential as future world changers.
My Project
Our first reading unit of the year is all about art- we talk about what art is, what it means to be an artist and all the different types of art. We read books about Jackson Pollock, Marian Anderson, poets, and kid artists too! We create an art museum in our classroom by blanketing the walls with colorful images of famous and culturally relevant artwork. And most importantly, we make art. The highlight of my year is these art projects and hearing comments like, "I'm the next Jackson Pollock" as our art unit becomes truly alive for our students.
As we will be starting off this school year 100% distance learning, we will not be able to complete those same art projects in class.
Instead, we want to create at-home art kits so we can complete art projects at home. We've included paint, paper, and string to recreate Pollock inspired art: clay and scratch paint paper for projects; and construction paper for origami. While distance learning is not ideal, we are determined to make sure this school year is still engaging and fun.
