My Students
Kindergarten is the beginning of what should be a long and happy journey into the amazing world of reading. Unfortunately, this is not always the case for special needs students who struggle with reading from the very beginning. Due to these struggles, they may shy away from reading books.
Let me introduce you to 9 bright-eyed kindergarteners and 3 bright-eyed first graders.
Eleven boys and one girl enter my classroom, located in an urban neighborhood in New York City, eager to learn and tackle the challenges of the school day. Despite their disabilities, each and every one of them is working hard to become successful students.
My Project
It is important from this early age, that my students develop a love of books and embrace reading. They enjoy read alouds and love stories being read to them. Due to their disabilities, they struggle with letters, sounds and sight words. Audiobooks will help them overcome these challenges. They will be able to see and hear the text at the same time helping them recognize letters, sounds and sight words. They will benefit from the narrator's reading fluency and dramatic pauses. My students will be able to follow the written story without struggling with the vocabulary and be able to comprehend the story. They will become more confident readers and feel successful.
Successful reading is the key to all learning, and it is imperative that students embrace reading at an early age.
Special needs students try so hard to overcome their reading challenges. It is vital that they have as many resources available to help them become confident readers. Audiobooks will undoubtedly help build their self-confidence and provide them with the ability to read along independently and develop an everlasting love for reading.
