This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is an elementary school that serves students from Kindergarten to 5th grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban population in Los Angeles, California. In such a dense part of LA sports teams aren't easily available. Our running club is one of the most sought-after clubs and has had much success.
We are a Title I school that serves low-income families from different cultural backgrounds and diverse needs.
Sports and physical activity is important for all students and our running club is open to every single one of our students.
My Project
I've been coaching our school's running club for the last 5 years. It's an after-school program in which we invite students from kinder to 5th grade to participate in our running club. For the last three years, we have participated in our local Chinatown Firecracker 5K/10K run. Last year two of our students placed 1st and 2nd in their age range for the 10K run. We want to continue the tradition of our runners participating in this event and this year we'd like your help in sponsoring 16 3rd -5th grade students.
Physical activity and team sports are an important piece for student growth and achievement.
Our running club and participation in 5K/10Ks gives our students the opportunity to achieve, get moving and feel good about themselves. Running is a sport that allows all students to accomplish individual goals, it's non-competitive, low impact and all students become winners.
