My Students
6th graders enter a whole new world on their first day of middle school. They may know some kids from various elementary classes but that doesn't change the fact that middle school is a scary new place they must adjust to. The middle school music classroom can help alleviate the difficulties of this transition. Over their three years in music, they develop friendships, have fun, and, yes, learn to play music. I have witnessed the development of an amazing community of young musicians in my years teaching band and orchestra. This community has stuck with me above everything else.
My school is as diverse as they come, representing many different ethnicities and cultures.
In such an setting, it is inspiring to see such a strong community develop among young musicians. These students are incredible contributors to a positive school climate that helps every child feel safe, loved, and free to expand their creative minds. They love being goofy with each other but also know when to buckle down and get to work. I wouldn't teach in any other school.
My Project
Our instrumental music program is at a turning point, which has been both blessing and a curse. In this case, music stands are a prized necessity to keep up with our budding enrollment. We currently have 36 functional music stands. We have approximately 200 students enrolled in instrumental music, with some classes containing upwards of 60 students. By now, you can see the issue we are facing. We simply do not have enough music stands to support all the kids who want to be in band or orchestra!
While the program is quickly growing, our enrollment is increasing beyond our means.
We simply do not have enough functional equipment to maintain our growth. By donating to this project, you can help us replace old and unusable music stands, while also building an inventory that will accommodate our growing enrollment this year and beyond. Thank you for considering adding your support to this project!
