This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you read an entire chapter book? Do you remember the sense of accomplishment you felt? Do you remember feeling like you were really growing up? My scholars can have those same feelings - even at the ages of 5 and 6!

I teach Kindergarten in a high-performing charter school to an economically and ethnically diverse population that serves four very different communities.

The teachers and families at my school believe that children deserve to reach their potential and there is no excuse for a child to not have the option to go to college. The scholars in my class are 26 of the brightest and most eager to learn students I have ever taught. They represent the core values of our school (discipline, respect, enthusiasm, accountability, and maturity, aka DREAM) almost without fail.

My Project

I am requesting a leveled library for my classroom. A leveled library consists of a variety of books at each child's independent reading level. By having these resources in the classroom, scholars are able to choose "just right" books - books that scholars can read by themselves and enjoy an incredible sense of success. Each day, my scholars have the opportunity to read books independently. While reading story books and other pieces of authentic literature are incredibly beneficial to all children, I believe it is just as important for scholars to be reading books that help them feel like real readers.

Leveled libraries help scholars feel in control of their learning.

Scholars know what their independent reading level is, which therefore allows them to always be working towards a goal. Having academic goals is not only incredibly motivating for these young children, but it puts into place a positive pattern of behavior. My scholars will have the mind-set to set a goal, achieve it, and move right on to a new goal. My scholars will be ready for college!
