Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Students learn best when they are using their knowledge to make the world a better place. Our school helps students see the intersectionality of their learning and environmental science. As a math teacher, I want to expose my students to ways in which they can use their math knowledge to further protect the world's resources, animals, land, and people.
This project will fund students engaging in an interdisciplinary project between Math, Environmental Studies, and Art.
Students will be taking on the role of a scientist and use exponential equations to model the population decline of endangered species. They will conduct research about the animal and what threatens its populations. Furthermore, they will research the animals' current population and endangerment level. Students will then take this data and make predictions about the population in years to come.
The culminating deliverable will be a beautiful infographic educating the community about the animal and sparking action to be taken to protect the population. We hope to post these informational posters around our school's campus to educate their peers on wildlife around the globe. We hope that this large format printer, paper, and toner will help bring their environmental activism to life and help them reach a wider audience.
