This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach an English Language Learners 3rd grade class in a Type 1 inner city school. Most students in this area live in poverty, struggle academically, have special needs, and do not speak English. Due to this, our school provides a 100 percent free lunch and breakfast to all students.

Even though these children live in difficult situations, they all have great potential.

My students are wonderful, exciting, and delightful. They amaze me and make me laugh! To help with their English development and academic success, I need more tools. My students are at different levels academically; most below grade level. A few of my students have medical issues and behavior plans, where they can't even sit in a chair for a few minutes. In addition, many come from broken homes and live in housing too small for all the occupants.

In order to assist my students to become successful academically, we need more tools of which my school has no budget at this time.

My Project

The use of white dry erase boards is a daily engagement activity in my classroom. Students use white boards to respond to questions, practice word work activities, math computations, and problem solving. The students use the white boards especially during math. Students are focused on problem solving and eager to show and share their work.

Your donation of white boards will help me increase student engagement and check for understanding, which results in higher academic achievement.

The students solve problems recording their understanding of problem solving strategies during guided math instruction. The white boards allow me to see exactly what they are doing and giving me feedback. This sharing of ideas with white boards leads to better student engagement resulting in students taking ownership of their learning.

Students are especially motivated to share their ideas with their learning buddies as they engage in joint problem solving activities with their personal white boards. Your donation of white boards will help facilitate my students' academic growth and be greatly appreciated.
