Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is located in an urban neighborhood made up mostly of apartments, outside downtown Los Angeles. The school is public, Title 1, and serves kindergarten through 8th grade.
My students are bright, energetic, and inquisitive learners.
Reading, art, and physical education are some of their favorite subjects. They are all of Hispanic descent and many speak Spanish at home with their families. I try to give the students opportunities and experiences so they can see possibilities for their futures.
My Project
Do you remember the pride and excitement you felt getting your fingers around your first musical instrument? I remember being an eight year old putting my fingers on the keys of my shiny, silver flute and blowing into the tone hole to hear sound of notes come out.
I want my third grade students to begin their lifelong appreciation of music and feel that sense of pride by learning to play their very own recorder.
My students will be able to take their recorders home to practice songs and play music for their families. Through learning how to play the recorder, my students will develop their musicality and sense of musicianship. Studies show that students who learn music improve their language, listening, and math skills and have increased self esteem. All things we want for our students.
