My Students

I teach art at an inner-city Title I school. Our school is a special place, because we are a part of the transformation zone, a long journey to turn around the climate and culture of a chronically failing school. We are now in year four of transformation and no longer a failing school. Despite the social disparities our students face, we are a model transformation school that is continuing to grow.

We have been successful with our students because of our own professional development to help evolve our teaching practices.

In my art room, students have the opportunity to be creative and express themselves. The art room also levels the playing field for all students. No matter where they are academically, they can excel in creativity. It is a happy and joyful place for children to be children.

Attending art conferences provides relevant professional development for the visual arts. These conferences provide research based teaching strategies and hands-up workshops. Conference attendees walk away with lesson plans feeling knowledgeable and refreshed. Bringing back great ideas is exciting to share with students.

My Project

The NAEA National Convention is an annual event providing substantive professional development services that include the advancement of knowledge in all sessions, events, and activities for the purpose of improving visual arts instruction in American schools. As such, it is the world's largest arts education convention.

By rejuvenating the creative mind and gaining new artistic experiences, I will be able to elevate student achievement in the art room.

Attending the National Convention will allow me to participate in hands-on workshops to further my own skills as an artist. Participation in sessions relating to best practices in the art room will further enhance student engagement in the art room. I will also have the opportunity to communicate with art vendors about new products and sample materials for the classroom. I have also been accepted as a presenter at this conference, which will allow me to share my own knowledge with other art teachers.
