My Students

My students represent the diversity of Boston. Most of my students come from high poverty areas of the city, and their families come from around the world including Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cape Verde, Vietnam and more. Our school's mission is to cultivate leadership through community service learning and adherence to rigorous academic, social and civic expectations with the desired outcome that students become lifelong activists in and advocates for their communities.

In order for students to become knowledgeable and effective community activists, they must understand the larger world through reading and critical thinking.

By cultivating a love of reading, I hope that my students will strengthen reading stamina and improve their literacy skills so that they build confidence and desire to tackle the tough texts we do assign in the classroom.

My Project

Twice a week, my students engage in silent sustained reading of a book of their choice. The books I am requesting will further build a library that caters to my diverse learners' interests and reading levels.

The purposes of independent reading is twofold.

It builds stamina and fosters a love of reading for the sake of reading. Since beginning my classroom library last year, I have had students tell me with pride that they've read more books on their own than they have in the past. I've witnessed students who typically struggle during whole class instruction become immersed in a book they found in our classroom library during independent reading.

Providing opportunities for students to see themselves and to learn more about the world around them in the books they read will help shape them as literate citizens in the future.
