My students need production materials to build technical skills for our Spring Musical!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school just returned from the Regionals competition where we performed "Little Women" and our leading actress was 1 of 10 students out of 3000 who won the Excellence in Acting Award for her role. It was the first time our school has ever competed in a theatrical competition. Last year, our students astounded the community with multiple performances including Thornton Wilder's "Our Town", Meredith Willson's musical "The Music Man" and "Broken Encounters" an original student written, performed and technically designed production.
I teach at a Title I High School in North Carolina where several of my students come from low income, single family homes and 100% percent of the student body receives free breakfast and lunch.
My students need production resources as they build technical trade skills while assembling and preparing the theatrical backdrop for our spring musical, "THE WIZ". Our district is facing a shrinking arts curriculum budget. We are seeking funding to rent a professional background drop of the Emerald City for this upcoming production. Our facility has only 12 feet of performance space and this particular drop would give the students a dazzling background to complement their performances and room to be able to perform without additional sets taking up room. The rental of the theatrical drop and shipping is $865 however the students will be hosting a local spirit night to raise some of the funds. So, we are really hoping to raise the remaining funds here through this donors choose initiative.
The potential of our students to express, to act, to fuel their artistic expression--this should not be limited.
My students connect their academics, future careers, their behaviors and their actions to the arts and gain valuable skills, which are interchangeable with their future careers, but also boosts self-confidence and pride in a place where they feel safe.
Help be a champion for our students in achieving their creative dreams. They have real talent, and have real pain and real life experiences to draw from that fuels their performances, as well as their technical endeavors.
