My Students

Do you remember when your teacher in elementary school read you stories? What was your favorite part of that experience? My favorite part was looking at the pictures. Since I have so many students, many are unable to see the pictures since they must sit far away on the carpet.

I teach 1st grade for an urban low income public school in Illinois with a population of about 800, grades Pre-8th.

This year funding was significantly cut and supplies and resources are scarce. I pay out of pocket for most supplies in my class. I have 26 students in my room (most classrooms exceed 30 students) and the majority are English Language Learners, speaking Spanish as their primary language. My students are very well-behaved and hard workers. Often they are very quiet and shy, due to language barriers. Academically, most of my students are below grade level standards, with a few that are at grade level standards. Most students received reduced price or free lunch, as well as breakfast in the morning that is eaten in the classroom.

My Project

Learning how to become independent readers is an important skill implemented throughout 1st grade. Students most learn reading strategies such as inferencing, predicting, author's purpose, etc. Currently, because I have so many students, it is very difficult for all of my students to see the pictures in the story, when I read a book. My students are ELLs so they especially need the images to help them make meaning of the text. I would like a document camera and projector to help my students see images clearly on a screen, since the image will be blown up. The ability to clearly see the pictures will help them develop their literacy skills. Furthermore, a document projector can be used for other subjects, such as math. I currently use an old overhead projector and I must trace my math worksheets on clear transparencies so I can model the activities for my students.

Please help my underprivileged students become better readers.

A document camera and projector would enhance all literacy experiences in my room! It will also improve my instruction, since I will be able to better model my lessons in all subjects.
