My students need to see plants grow so I requested a germination station. In addition, we need books, activities, and games to learn how the plant parts work together to grow.
My day is 'creative chaos'! We have five different activities going on most of the time. I want each child to feel successful so they are all doing differentiated activities . While they are busy learning, they are watching for a friend to give a random act of kindness.
My 28 little ones are amazing and my heart.
I am so proud of them! We have some basic rules in the classroom that they all know and happily follow:
It is OK to make mistakes, that is how we learn.
We always try out best.
Treat ourselves, others and our classroom with respect.
They are readers, authors, mathematicians, musicians, dancers, scientist, researchers, community activist and kind, caring, generous people. I am fortunate to have friends and family members that have helped to inspire them to dream of college and great careers. It is my job to help make their dreams come true.
My Project
This is NYC first graders first year with a brand new curriculum. In our fifth unit, my little ones will be answering the question, "How do plants survive and grow?" As a result they will understand that plants have different parts that help them survive and grow. We will turn our classroom into a greenhouse with plants everywhere you look. I am excited to see their faces as they observe plants they are growing bigger.
My brother recently reminded me of one of our favorite activities growing up- digging in red Georgia clay to plant a garden with my granddaddy.
I learned about how import it is to take care of something, be responsible and enjoy the results. I want to give this to my little ones. They live in the Bronx, NY. They are missing out on the opportunity to watch nature up close and personal. I am hoping they will also learn to appreciate nature and want to make NYC a little greener.
