My Students
I teach first grade at an elementary school in Northeast Philadelphia. My students enter the classroom each day excited to learn how to read, write, speak and listen. They each have a heart of gold paired with motivation and determination to be the best that they can be.
Our students come from all over the world including Albania, Russia, Ukraine, Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala, China, Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh and of course, Philadelphia.
At our school more than 60% of our student population is economically disadvantaged and 10% are English language learners. Our school provides a nurturing environment for students, staff, and families to enrich them academically and grow as positive social contributors in our world. Our parents are extremely supportive and involved in their child's education. Our parents and students aspire to succeed and achieve their goal of living the American Dream.
Due to the financial crisis, all of our educational supplies, resources, and materials are either limited or non-existent. Many teachers spend much of their own paychecks each year to be sure that they, along with their students, have everything that they need to succeed!
My Project
Although my first graders and I will be teaching and learning virtually to start the school year, I still value the pencil and paper during these times. Teaching proper letter formation and handwriting to students is important for a number of reasons. I am requesting dry erase lap boards, penmanship composition books and dry erase markers for my students to use during virtual learning.
Handwriting in the earliest grades is linked to basic reading and spelling achievement.
Every day in Phonics and Spelling we will be practicing how to form letters properly, how to write words properly, and how to write and structure sentences properly in order to become proficient readers, writers, speakers and listeners.
By giving my students dry erase boards, markers, and composition books, we will be able to take off running at the beginning of the school year and this will allow them to practice penmanship with pencil and paper and not just through a computer screen or on a keyboard.
