Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our 1st grade students live in a low income urban environment. They are surrounded by apartment buildings and concrete. They are very limited in their exposure to nature and the science behind it. Many of our students don't even have a pet. This project will include all the 1st graders in our school

Early exposure to science is a very important factor related to students interest in later grade levels, and frankly our students are missing out.

This year I would love to help provide a hands on life science project for all of the first graders in our school. I have had the pleasure of teaching the life cycle of a chick using an incubator to hatch chicks in the classroom. Each time it has been an amazing learning experience that my students never forget. They actually learn the stages of development that an egg goes through and get to watch live chicks hatch in the classroom. They write about all the changes in their science journal and best of all they get to hold them, name them, and care for them after they hatch. I still have older students come back and tell me how they remember hatching our chicks. They even remember the names we gave them.

My Project

In order for our 80 first grade students to experience this project we need incubator sets that include incubators with a viewer window and automatic egg turners. We also need special thermometers to insure that our eggs have ideal conditions and chick life cycle sets to give each class a 3-D view of the changes that happen inside the egg on each of the 21 days.

Our first graders need exposure to the sciences and this project is an excellent way to get them interested in the world around them.

We would greatly appreciate any donation you can give. Thanks for considering our children.
