Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the first time you fell in love with a book or an author? That unquenchable desire to know more; to experience life in that time or place; how to get there? That feeling of not being able to wait for the next book that would make your heart soar as your imagination ran free?
I teach a wonderful group of inquisitive immigrant Latino pre-teens and their thirst to learn not just a new culture and language but, to also be able to discuss with peers the latest story or documentary is awe inspiring.
Still, many lack the most basic academic skills and must not only learn a new language but also learn a new process of academic thought. The majority of my students come from various nations where education at times takes a back seat to work due to poverty. Many have never read a book that is focused on their age group, while others are only now beginning to understand that it is THEIR critique of the story not a verbatim regurgitation of a book that the teachers are requesting. This critique is what is now being requested by the curriculum we are addressing and, without practice of these skills, many fail the assessments given to them; no matter the language it is given in. As their teacher I attempt to foster a love of reading as we develop our academic skills.
My Project
Every year our students are expected to read at least 35 self-selected books for their independent reading time. They are given 35 minutes of independent reading and 10 minutes to write a brief summary of the reading. During the summary part, students are asked to analyze any part of the reading they desire; characters, location, conflict, time, etc. using the skills learned during class. Once they finish their book they are asked to give a final summation in writing by either: comparing aspects of the book to another they have read, or analyzing behaviors, plot, conflict or any literary element they deem important as they critique the story. Through reading, highlighting important aspects & taking notes, they learn new words to broaden their vocabulary and experience the love of reading for learning enjoyment not the burden of reading to complete assignments.
My students are in need of an imagination explosion, they are in need of a library which invites them to love reading. Books including: La ladrona de libros, A Long Walk to Water & Bajo la misma estrella.
Your generous donations will help them develop the love of reading we all want our children to have; to develop an understanding of what's written by analyzing, practicing & applying academic skills learned.
Your gift will help them learn to analyze & interpret the mistakes & positive examples of characters, in turn helping them become assets to our society as their academic knowledge expands. Wont you please help them learn and experience the world as they live a thousand lives through ink?
