Help Our Students Learn English

My students need help improving their English language skills. They need, among other things, a Phonemic Awareness Games Library, a magnetic storyboard, and a complete kit for language patterns and vocabulary.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Kunce's classroom raised $561

My Students

Can you imagine moving to another country at 5 years old where you don't speak the language? Your parents are learning English as well so the best place for you to learn English is at school. But a lot of your day is spent trying to learn about math and reading in a language you don't understand

We are a school located in an economically challenged urban area.

We were recently reopened after being closed for four years so now students can attend a school closer to their home. Forty percent of our students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. A majority of our students are eligible for free and reduced lunch. Our school is a college preparatory school which believes in providing a high quality education for all students regardless of their economic situations or backgrounds.

My Project

Our English language learners need help learning English so they can become better students. I have requested supplies that will help them with their English language proficiency. These resources include activities that will help them with their sentence development, vocabulary, and grammar. For example, with the "building better sentences" kit, our students can learn and practice the difference between present tense and past tense. For our younger students, they can learn about letter sounds. Working with trained English teachers and instructional assistants, we want them to improve their English so they are able to fully participate in school.

Students are surrounded by language all day.

They need to follow directions, understand the content, and talk with their classmates. Because of their limited knowledge of English, many students cannot fully participate in learning. Building their confidence by working specifically on their English skills will help them become better students and set them up to succeed in school.
