This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students need to have opportunities to create music. Currently, recorders are the only thing that makes up our music program. We hope to improve our music program by bringing in additional instruments for the students.
Students at our school are eager to learn new skills and have new experiences!
We are a very small school with a close-knit environment. This leads to being able to have a variety of programs to meet the needs and interests of our students.
My Project
For the past three years, I have taught recorders to students, from 2nd to 5th grades. They have always played in a holiday concert and last year for the first time, they played "Star-Spangled Banner" on their recorders for the 5th grade graduation. Recorders are the extent of the music program at our school. I am hoping to improve the music program through incorporating other instruments into our songs. My students need a set of rhythm instruments, lummi sticks, brass cymbals, and 8 xylophones to help us start our elementary school band.
Recorders are the only instrument which currently exists in our music curriculum.
These additional instruments will help students to be able to create their own music, using rhythm, pitch, and tone.
