This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students attend a charter school that emphasizes the arts and serves a high-need community. Students receive music education for seven years and have the opportunity to participate in the band program to rehearse and perform for three years.
As I see my students working hard day in and day out in order to master their instruments at a young age, I am reminded that my primary responsibility as their music teacher is to secure opportunities for their future. We have an amazing music program that offers our students a great deal, but I feel that I am unable to provide all of my students with the resources they need to be able to audition and gain acceptance to the area's premier secondary schools, Saturday programs, and summer programs.
As I see a few of our graduating students gain entry into these life-changing programs, I am inspired and even feel required to ensure that any child in our school have the means to apply as well. Our problem is simple: without professional (or at least intermediate) quality instruments, it is exponentially harder for these kids to make the same impression as students who have had the benefit of owning their own instruments and receiving years of private lessons.
We are proposing a large project on DonorsChoose.org with the hopes of finding several generous benefactors to provide instruments to our students that will allow them to showcase the years of hard work that they have put in to their craft. If we can help move even a few young musicians into the schools that will change their lives, then I feel we have a responsibility to give them that choice.
