Our school is a diverse, multicultural, Title I school that is dedicated to providing students with a rigorous and relevant instructional program. I teach two equally wonderful 5th grade classes in math and science. I maintain high expectations for all students and truly believe in our students and their ability to succeed.
In my classroom, I have a wide variety of student abilities and languages, but I ensure that all students have the opportunity to be exposed to hands-on, STEAM-based learning.
More than anything, our school aims to inspire students to become well-rounded learners and individuals.
My Project
STEM education refers to the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEAM education incorporates the “A” for the arts, recognizing that to be successful in technical fields, individuals must also be creative and use critical thinking skills which are best developed through exposure to the arts. STEAM is an approach to the world, a critical way to understand, explore, and engage with the world, and then have the capacity to change that world. With funding constraints and a lack of basic Science lab supplies, conducting hands-on, STEAM-based experiments is often difficult.
I try create as many opportunities as possible for unique learning experiences, and giving my students access to supplies that can cause changes in temperature, such as a refrigerator and microwave, will broaden their ability to conduct Science lab experiments in my classroom.
With these appliances, we would be able to track the growth of mold using temperature as a variable. With these appliances, we will be able to observe the differences in using cooled microwaved tap water to water plants versus using regular tap water. A refrigerator and microwave within my classroom will allow students access to Science labs that were previously not possible, and these experiences make all of the difference!
