A paper famine has struck Amos Elementary in NW Washington D.C. and we need your help. Our office is about to begin rationing the last of our paper, and we don't have ample funds to buy more.
After a conversation with administrators at our school today, I realized I had to take action. The school is down to its last box of paper right now, and we don't know if we can order more or how much we can order. Paper is a critical part of a well functioning school. Teachers use paper to enhance student learning by creating graphic organizers, independent practice worksheets, and homework assignments. The paper shortage will diminish student learning. To give one example, in my class I have five students at very low reading levels. When we are reading an article, I try to print out information that is accessible to them, so they can gain the same knowledge but not be incredibly frustrated. This will be impossible to do now that we are rationing paper.
The other teachers at my school face similar problems. Our special ed teacher has 16 children at all different levels, and differentiating for them requires lots of activities and those activities require paper. Her students need reading materials in large print. They need behavior management plans taped to their desk each day. They need fill in the blank activities and sentence starters.
I have requested 12 boxes of paper (each with 10 reams of paper in it) to help our school get through the rest of this year. None of this paper will come to my individual classroom. All of it will go straight to the office, and the office will then make sure teachers and other staff members have access to it. This paper will ensure that students in grades pre-K through 5 will continue to get the resources they need to learn and also help our school continue to communicate with parents.
So many people need this proposal. Please help us make this a successful year. A school without paper is truly a school in crisis.
