Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school population is 98% Hispanic and 97% free or reduced-price lunch. Our students are great kids who come from a number of difficult backgrounds. Our students are eager to learn and come to school every day with great attitudes towards learning. Many of our students enjoy the opportunity to learn at our school because this is their safe place. For many of our students, our school provides them with a sense of normalcy that they may not have in their lives outside of school.
My Project
Our school is a Title I school with most of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our district is on a Modified A/B schedule; this means some students come on Mondays and Thursdays, the other students come on Tuesdays and Friday and all students learn from home on Wednesdays.
At this time during the pandemic we are supplying students with breakfast and lunch to be taken home for days they are not at school.
Our original plan was to have students pick up these items at the end of the day, but the reality was that many students were forgetting to pick up these items. This left most of our students without food for days until they came back to school. So, we came up with a better plan. We have an ambassador group of older students and our counselors who help deliver the breakfast and lunches to the classrooms at the end of the day. The problem we are running into is that we do not have carts to help transport these items in bulk. So our ambassadors are delivering to one classroom at a time. This is taking a lot of time. The gift of carts would allow us to deliver to multiple classrooms at one time and allow use to ensure that all of our students will have food on the days they are not at school.
