This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kindergarten is a magical age! It is a time when most children learn to read for the first time. I love seeing the transformation of my students! Most enter Kindergarten not knowing all the letters and sounds of the alphabet but by the end of the year, my students will be fluent readers!

Our school is a K-8 school in East Oakland functioning as a center of health within the neighborhoods surrounding it, providing wrap-around services in education, health, housing, and job training.

The long-term goal is to create a model for urban education that prioritizes the needs of youth and families as the pathway to building healthy and sustainable communities across the U.S. and around the world. The name of the our school was inspired by the book of poetry based on the writings of Tupac Shakur released in 1999, The Rose That Grew from Concrete. This vivid image captures the need to celebrate the tenacity and will of the rose that against-all-odds, finds a way to grow in the inhospitable and toxic environment of the concrete that it might transform the concrete into a rose garden.

My Project

In order to build reading fluency, my students need to be able to practice reading books independently. As I teach small groups how to read, I am able to find out each child's independent reading level. Through leveled books, each child knows which level of book is just right for them. Each student in my class has a book bag where they keep books I have taught in Guided Reading groups. Each time a student gets a new Guided Reading book, I ask that they choose two books at their independent level from our classroom library and place it in their book bags. These books are then read during independent reading time or during Guided Reading. The book sets I chose are all leveled books for kindergarten. They contain science, math, and social studies content and vocabulary so that students learn to read but also learn new concepts.

Donating to my classroom project means that you are helping 44 kindergarten students have access to books at their independent reading level.

Currently, our classroom library does not contain many leveled books. I am unable to have students choose leveled books at this time because there are not enough for all of them. Your contribution will ensure that all of my students have a chance to practice reading their leveled books independently in class.
