I am the librarian at an urban elementary school in Brooklyn that serves an incredibly diverse group of students, nearly half who come from low-income households. We have students from all over the world, and one of the things they have in common is that they love to read!
I want the students at my school to be excited to come to the library to relax and enjoy reading and talking about books, as well as be able to just take a break from the day.
Comfortable seating would allow me to accommodate more students as well as make them feel welcome and relaxed.
My Project
Comfortable seating in the library allows students to relax, and read! Our much loved couch had to be retired this summer due to a general state of disrepair. The library currently only has wooden tables and chairs that do not encourage students to flop down and get cozy with a book. My goal is for the library to be an inviting place where kids can feel free to take a break from the school day as well as hang out before and after school.
Making the library welcoming and comfortable is essential to ensuring that it is well-utilized.
I have noticed that students are more likely to spend time here when there is an abundance of comfortable seating.
