My Students

"A house without books is like a room without windows." [Heinrich Mann] Strong Early Literacy Skills are essential - especially for our English Language Learners and Students with Special Needs. We want to create a welcoming, PRINT-RICH, "Reading Nook" area, so our Students can FOCUS ON READING!

We are a Title I, NYC Public School in Queens, where nearly 60% of our students qualify for free / reduced lunch.

As a successful Early Childhood School in New York City, we provide a nurturing, yet rigorous community of learning. Our Pre-K through Grade 3 Students are encouraged to think critically and explore through a hands-on, process–based curriculum. LITERACY IS INTEGRATED INTO ALL CURRICULUM AREAS. Our commitment to differentiated instruction supports Students of all ability levels in every classroom by integrating: ● English Language Learners (ELL students) ● ● English as a Second Language (ESL students)● ● Students with Special Needs ● ● General Education students ● Our community is quite international with almost 70% of our Students coming from homes where English is spoken as a second language. One-fifth of our Students receive extra support for learning English. We also provide communications to Parents in 4 home languages [English, Chinese, Spanish, Korean].

My Project

"Reading Nook" request for 89 BOOKS: ● (31) King Series: 3 Kindergarten Sets plus Teacher's Guide. These "just right" level books will cover a wide range of reading ability levels. The King School Books will provide engaging, leveled reading for emergent readers. The ETHNIC-DIVERSITY of Students featured will help our kids relate to the characters and their stories - critically important for our ELLs and Students with Special Needs. ● (19) Multicultural-Themed Books: Cinderella Tales from 13 cultures; Kindergarten Day USA and China ● (15) Nonfiction Early Readers to build confidence and fluency: A Walk on the Beach; Snow; Sharks ● (13) Character Education titles to foster positive self-image and good citizenship: Being Fair; Being Honest; Being Helpful; One ● (6) Nonfiction focused on USA and NYC ● (5) Art and Music introductory books ● (1) Literacy-themed Carpet to provide comfortable, designated space in our classroom for our Students to curl up with these great books!

Our integrated classroom is crowded and increasing class sizes make this "Reading Nook" tricky to create, but designating this space is critical for our Students.

Setting aside a special area to FOCUS ON READING will show them just how IMPORTANT READING IS FOR ALL OF US! Our Students are really EXCITED TO READ. We want to actively ENCOURAGE and ENHANCE their budding, love of reading with NEW BOOKS and a cozy nook in our classroom!
