This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students with Autism are part of a school community of approximately 1,400 who attend school eager to learn. They enjoy learning vocational, social, motor, and academic skills daily. My students are inquisitive, passionate, eager, and motivated to learn independently.

My Project

Many of my students have Autism and Sensory issues. Growing this garden will allow my students to input various types of information with their senses within this area. My students will have to be aware of the 5 basic senses along with body awareness, coordination and balance while assisting with planting, digging, organizing and measuring plant growth. Many of my students have these sensory issues and visiting a garden that they've planted will assist them in calming down and experiencing a real garden. Also many of my students cannot stand for long periods of time; therefore seating is needed. Tranquil sounds like flowing water and birds chirping assist the students in calming down as well. These students rarely have seen a garden much less participate in the planting, growing, harvesting, and just listening to nature. We will be able to touch, smell, feel , listen, taste, and measure various types of vegetables, herbs, pollinators, annuals and perennials. This would be a great area to support their daily curriculum and learning experiences.
