My Students
"Are you ready to learn Tigers?" is what I always ask my 1st-grade students every day. They always reply with a resounding "Yes Mr. B!" as they enter my class.
Many of my students come from homes that were adversely affected by the hurricanes last school year, and they still struggle in terms of having sufficient school supplies.
My school also has a high number of students who are first-generation immigrants from Haiti.
As a dedicated educator, I strongly believe that all children will learn if they are given the opportunities, right learning tools, and are placed in a dynamic setting. As their teacher, my main objective is to enhance and improve their young learning experiences and provide an engaging learning environment.
My Project
Last school year, Donorschoose.org funded my very first project and the hands-on materials requested, helped my fourth-grade students tremendously. My students were engaged and their handwriting skills showed a marked improvement.
This school year, I was given first-grade and my new students show similar areas that are in need of further development, specifically in their motor/tactile skills.
Moving to first grade left me at a disadvantage as the teaching tools and resources I had were not appropriate. I had to start from scratch and certain supplies are desperately needed.
Learning how to hold a pencil and write on the lines are of paramount importance and the triangular-shaped pencils are ideal for helping little hands learn how to write properly. The journals will also be used by our first-graders daily as they start each day learning to write a new sentence, express a thought or copy new spelling words.
The following directions kit is very useful in helping first-graders students improve their tactile skills while interacting with others. The visuals on the cards will also help them with developing their spacial skills.
